Whether you purchase an adjustable toe ring or one that is a fixed size, getting the correct size for your toe is important. If the toe ring is too small, it will be very difficult to put on or take off your toe. Likewise, when the ring is too large, it slips off too easily or rubs against your other toes uncomfortably. The toe has the narrower section connected to the foot and the padded section that touches the ground. The trick is to get the toe ring past the padded section while still being fairly snug in its resting place. Ideally, this will be right behind the padded part of the toe. 
Most of the time a properly fitted toe ring requires a small amount of lubrication to allow the ring to be pushed past the padded part of the toe. A squirt of window cleaning solution works great because it is easily washed from the toe once the ring is put into place.
The best way to measure the toe is to use a ring sizer. Lacking that, you can use a length of string to make the measurement. First snuggly wrap the string around the padded part of the toe, but not too tightly. Mark the length and measure it. Do the same for the part of the toe right behind the padded part. This frequently causes pinching and other irritations. When choosing your adjustable toe ring, be sure to get one that isn't too far from the ring size you need.
